A new drug called Viagra will be marketed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) in men who have already suffered a severe form of the disease. But it may not be the best idea to treat it for a decade.
Dr. Michael P. Schulz of the University of Rochester Medical Center said a company that is testing a drug called Sildenafil, which has been known to work for ED, has created a new drug that is based on a similar molecule, which has been approved for use in Europe.
Sildenafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis, but it is not FDA-approved to treat ED. Sildenafil has been found to have little or no side effects in the men who take it. In some patients, the drug has been shown to have little effect on the size of their penis.
“Erectile dysfunction is the most common sexually transmitted disease,” Schulz said. “There is no known cure.”
The Food and Drug Administration has warned that many patients taking the drug are at risk for side effects like headaches, vision problems, low blood pressure, and priapism.
Viagra is approved for use in the United States for erectile dysfunction. It is also approved in Europe for treating ED.
The new drug is a much-needed advance. The company hopes to be able to produce the drug in other countries that have similar populations.
The FDA has also recently approved sildenafil for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, a disorder that causes high blood pressure in the lungs. A drug that acts on blood vessels in the lungs is called vasodilators. Some of the vasodilators include the nitric oxide (NO) channel found in the heart.
Viagra is also approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, which is an enlargement of the arteries in the lungs that cause high blood pressure in the lungs. The use of a drug such as Viagra in a patient with high blood pressure will not work in the absence of the condition.
Sildenafil has been used in Europe for more than a decade and has been approved in more than half the countries that manufacture it. The drugs are available in two doses; 50 milligrams and 100 milligrams.
The FDA approved the drug for use in Europe in 2003, but it is not yet FDA-approved for the treatment of ED. The drug is currently in the European market, with more than 2 million prescriptions for ED in the last 12 months.

“We think this drug will be very important for us,” Schulz said. “We are seeing more men taking the drug and it will make their condition a lot easier.”
